Default Wheel bearing diagnosis

I've got a whine when driving that changes with speed and is still present with the engine turned off and coasting. I'm assuming a wheel bearing as I've tried moving tyres around and it makes no difference. How do I figure out which one? It doesn't change note when I fling it into corners or woble on a straight. It's also not the wife before I get that answer. I have 2 fronts on order from euro car parts flash sale last night advantage booked for Monday.

Default Jack up

Jack up each corner in turn and after securing with axle stand spin the wheel by hand. Do each one in turn and you should hear clearly which one is at fault. It will have a rumbling noise. It will sound quite different to a wheel that is ok.

Only from where the noise comes from. If there's no obvious graininess when individual wheels are turned by hand, it's rather difficult. I'd suggest getting someone to sit in the rear and listen carefully over each wheel while you drive it on a smooth road. Eliminate as much road/tyre noise as practicable. He may detect sound differences and directions that are impossible for the driver to identify.

cheers for the replies. I've tried each in the air and its not worn enough to be noticeable. Clutch took a few months and hubs saw the elements during it so guessing it took on water. I'll get the mechanics opinion and may just get them both done. I'm pretty sure it's a front one.

Spin the wheel and from underneath, hold a long screwdriver blade against the hub, then push your jaw bone just in front of your ear against the other end of the driver, you will be able to hear what's going on inside the hub by conducted noise...

A rough bearing can normally be felt as a vibration through the road spring, when not audible simply by spinning the wheel too

My usual trick is to find a sweeping bend - with more load present, the duff bearing will normally be louder.
Worthy of note - make sure decent branded items are fitted, as cheapies tend to cause ABS issues.

I bought Lucas so time will tell. I've also driven it like I stole it around corners with traction control doing its bit and I still can't pin it down. Going to get their opinion and have both done once I'm happy it is a wheel bearing.

I'm calling off the garage tomorrow as I'm still not convinced. I've a pair of ravs wheels that I will try tomorrow see how it effects the noise. It sounds like a whine of a bomber from a war film. Definitely not drive train related. It is just like really noisy tyres but why would I suddenly notice it more. Grr
