On this day in 1938, Mallard broke the world record for steam traction, when it reached a speed of 126 mph on a straight stretch of track between Grantham and Peterborough.

Mallard still holds the world record to this day.

Yes but it cooked the big end bearing on the centre cylinder, limped into Peterborough at reduced speed and couldn't carry on to Kings Cross, the train went forward with a replacement loco. Mallard had to go to Doncaster works for repair.
