Smile rover 75 first gear

Hi all, Just want to add one thing i discovered recently about my problem engaging first gear:

I had the same problem as many people have had with this car, sometimes changing to first gear was a nightmare. I assumed it must be the clutch slave/master but after months of living with the problem i realised that if i pressed the clutch pedal very hard to the floor it worked much better.

I inspected under the clutch pedal in the footwell and realised that a rubber seal which goes round the bottom of the steering column had partially lifted up. My clutch pedal was hitting this and preventing it from travelling the last half inch or so. Not much but enough to cause problems apparently. I pushed the rubber seal back in to place and it has been perfect since. Probably not going to work for everyone but well worth a look first of all. Now my clutch pedal feels like it hits metal at the bottom of it's travel rather than rubber, and first gear feels great every time.

worth a look before you spend hundreds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a pessimist by nature, but… my new clutch (£650) started doing this a year or two after being fitted, so I went to a different garage, full of doom & gloom. He bled the system, and it's been absolutely fine ever since (probably nearly a year now).

Bit of a bar steward to do apparently, as I think the master cylinder’s in a NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- of a place, but definitely worth trying that before you get the revolver, single bullet, and bottle of Scotch out…

The thing you dig out of our garden with a spade is a naughty word

Blimey, I'm off
