I had a 76 Mk3 Cortina and a 77 Mk4 Cortina with that engine. The 76 was running well and the engine was quiet but over time the fuel economy got worse and worse. I traced it to valve clearances that had closed up. I adjusted them back to recommended clearances and economy returned to normal. Fortunately I caught it before any valve damage.
