And just as important one decent one.

Not charging for diagnosis work and being honest and admitting they're stuck is a bit of a rarity from what I hear.

Thanks for the info.

Andy.

Good stuff and a happy ending !

Still pleased to report we have not scrapped a single 75 since we started in 2005 !!

Also every non runner which has turned up here either be AA RAC etc or DIY trailer has left here under it's own steam

Still learning about these cars even today though and faults are getting more weird as they get older.

I was wondering the other day where I'll take our cars to for servicing when I hang my clogs up....................mmm very difficult one that

Good point... When Dave over this way hangs up his gloves i'll be screwed! have to do everything myself and rely on these forums.

I have to be honest, the days of the older car specialiest and "that guy" who you take all your old stuff too and he fixes it straight away, electronic wizards like Brian when all these people decide to give things up... it'll be a downward spiral i think.
The likes of Jules and others well known on here really keep this community and these cars alive.

I see the answer here - you need to go and be Brian's apprentice, learning the trade...

Sorry you went through all the hassle before you got the car sorted properly.

When I brought my 75, there was an odd thing when you put your foot down, about 3000rpm, the engine would skip for a second, then slam back in on the power. Very odd. Very unpleasant! I took it back to the garage who sent it to their preferred mechanic who was "A rover mechanic for 20 years, knows everything about these cars.". I asked him what the chances are of the HGF, and how best to avoid it. His answer? "It's a Rover, it'll break no matter what you do." Really filled me with confidence, that!
He said it was a "pipe come off the turbo" that he stuck back on.

The head gasket failed! MG Rover Mobile Mechanics came out to do a fix. When the engine was being rebuilt, the fault lay in the wrong gasket being fitted, there being a second thermostat put in behind the engine block, the cases sealed with silicone to presumably stop a small leak, the turbo pipe that had come off had been bodged back with some strange connective pipework, the bleed nipple on the water pipe had been sheared off and the exhaust heat shield bent against the radiator somehow. The "20 years experienced" mechanic had missed precisely ALL of that.

As the MG Rover Mobile mechanic guys are about the closest to me, I'll use them for all Rover related issues from now on. They know their stuff, and they saved my car from the scrapheap. Finding guys that are honest, good and actually know what they are doing is like finding gold. Really glad you were able to get help from someone on here, but sorry it took you so long to find it.

As for potatoes, I likes mine roasted. In lard. For I am a fat knacker!

I can't recommend Terry highly enough, and he definitely knows his stuff

We in the north east know someone else with equally extensive MGR knowledge and skill, who also has a passion for keeping 75s and ZTs on the road, cant quite remember the name .....

Without the above, and yourself, Trikey,2 diesels,CB750 Chris,Arctic and all the others, who aren't traders, but still have the knowledge, the 75 and ZT would be seldom seen, and the club would not have the success and membership it currently does.

The thing is, its never been easier to be an expert. You can find out how to do anything on the internet! Anything.
Once upon a time all you had was a Haynes Manual, some mates down the pub and some local auto factors that weren't even open on Saturday mornings.

No excuse for 'not knowing' these days.
