Default New mot rules this month

The new mot rules this month are a bit scary.
Is the government trying to increase the sales figures for new cars?
I'm wondering on the wisdom of buying second hand, this could have devastating effects on second hand prices.

Whilst I suspect all cars made in the last 20 years should be able to pass the new rules or those that apply to them near the end of the month I wonder how many will.

what of out cars, is there to be a sudden decline over the next 12 months?
will sympathetic mot testers be the people to seek out.

I hope your right but its no smoke .................on a diesel that worries me. I have always tried to look after my cars and bikes and cant think of an mot failure car or bike in 30 years.

always ask the tester if there is anything to keep and eye on and its always a no.

fingers crossed.

It's no smoke on a diesel FITTED with a DPF ... as far as I know, no 75 CDT was ever fitted with a DPF

They may be sympathetic but they have to follow the rules. They get inspected and tested too, if they are 'passing' cars that would not meet the standards they can lose their license to work!

I've not seen much that is a worry. Visible smoke on the emissions test is one that might get picked up, my CDT was puffing when it was tested a few weeks ago, and the MOTer said that could fail it next year. A fuel filter filled with injector cleaner seems to have sorted that one out (for now).

Modified cars better watch out - removed DPF's and cats (which only our last diesels had) as well as HID light conversions in halogen lamp housings are a fail. There are probably some more but I've not looked that hard.

New rule changes mentioned here. The 'manual' with details of the regulations are here.

A mate of mine is a MOT tester who works for VW.
When I was asking him about the changes he said that they aren't testing for anything different just reporting it in a different way.
Although if your car is really old (I can't remember the exact age), you now don't need to test it at all!!!

Vehicles that have survived to be 40 years old will generally be used by people who uses them rarely but they will still be responsible for their roadworthlessness.

I do have a mate with a 40+ year old Triumph motorcycle who rides it every day (but he is also a motorcycle MOT tester!)

The 40 year old thing is simply because anyone that has a 40 plus year old vehicle will look after it big time. There will be nothing wrong with it.
AND modern MOT equipment won't be able to deal with it.

Old single leading shoe drum brakes on a modern brake roller lol 10% effective at best lol

Take my Kawasaki H2 750 triple (now sadly sold) and the smoke would be a health hazard for the MOT guy never mind the emissions machine lol
