TÜV (German MOT) passed today. No reasons for an objection and 24 more months on the road!

I know that the German MOT is more vigorous than our mot system. For instance, you can only have the size of wheels and tyres that are on the registration documents. You would not get away with changing your steering wheel for a start.

I believe any "upgrade" parts fitted to cars in Germany have to be TUV approved for fitment. A lot more stringent overall.

You are correct. They have to be approved by TUV and applicable to your vehicle. My son bought a new steering wheel over here, and when he took it for its mot later in Germany it failed on the wheel. He had to get another one that was approved.

This is the thing. The German mot is so strict many many car in the UK would be deemed unfit. Here people moan about mots but if you step back its for safety and keeping people alive. Many a death trap was on the road in the past with handwritten mots bought in a pub.
Its a blow when you get a huge bill but at least your driving something safe and if you go to an mot place that does not repair cars they arent looking for business they are just doing their job.

Is it also true that you are not allowed to mow the lawn, wash cars, play loud music or hammer nails between noon and 3pm?

... and not allowed to hand wash your car in the street, or on a Sunday?
