Spot on identification of the problem, which is why I spray mine internally and externally with Bilt Hamner products. Thin enough to cover and you can see through the clear wax.

If the E46 jobbies are made of alloy, couldn't they be fitted replacing the steel Rover ones? Or are they different enough to not be interchangeable?

Did exactly that before my new arms were fitted. Filled with Dinitrol and then sprayed outside too.
