Fan Silver Resistor. Help Needed
Hi
Some of you may know i have checked my fan and found that it does not work on the low speed and that i have the old 3 speed fan. I have now managed to secure a 2 speed fan with silver resistor, what is now my next step apart from fitting it, should i change the resistor to the upgrade gold one, also do i need or can i test this fan without fitting first. Photos of said item below. Note how the resistor is hidden behind the fan. Note wire that have been cut would i need to join or replace these in any way. close up of the wires close up of resistor behind the fan in this pic you can see that a Green/Yellow wire as been cut very close, also a Green ? and a thicker brown wire ? Do i also have to adapt these fixing hole to help fit the new fan more easly. Any help from members whom have done this mod would be so appreciated. Arctic.

Putting 12volts across the two wires going into the motor should cause it to run. It almost certainly will, so extreme caution advised. The whole thing will fly off like a helicopter if not held down in a vice, etc.
The silver resistor is the OEM one and has/will probably fail. This should be cut out and replaced with a 100watt 0.5-1.0 ohm one. This will provide the low speed. They get blistering hot and should be fixed to the bracket on the framework so it gets cooled in the draft.. |

As TC says the motor should run with 12V applied, it will take may amps so use thick cables, e.g. jump leads and if you go through a fuse, make sure its a big one. And hold the thing securely to prevent injuries!
Chuck out the old resistor and get a new one from Jules. The link posted is from elsewhere but the Jules one has correct holes drilled & wires fitted and I think its cheaper - plus he's a member on here so please support him! Also mount in the proper place on the bracket in the airflow. Loads of info on here about this. If you don't want to disconnect & de-gas aircon pipes, you must cut away more plastic from both top and bottom holes so you can slide the fan shroud into place. Not sure about wiring from control box, the diesel is quite different from petrol. I believe its expecting to drive a 3-speed fan so you need to wire it up so that both low & medium outputs will make the new 2-speed fan run on low. Again there is info for this here if you search! |

HI Andyv.
I have been in touch with jules but he has been away i am waiting on him to get intouch about weather i should use this or if it would have been better to get a kenlowe, am hoping this is ok to use finger crossed. Which wire do i use to join the 12volts to i have a spare battery in the shed will this surfice

Well, a new motor is always going to be better than a rusty used one, but at a cost! If your old motor runs OK, I would use that with a new resistor.
Trace the red and black wires that go to the motor itself to apply 12V across them. One goes to a relay inside the control box, the other to one of the plugs. If you have a multimeter, you can check the continuity first. Using a spare battery is always preferable to one installed in a car! |
