Default setting up a website by someone that is PC illiterate

are there any quick and easy guides to go about this ?
how do I check if a domain name is allocated ?
how do I register a domain name and how much does this cost ( and who gets the money ?)

fasthosts.co.uk have a good integrated checker for seeing what's available... and what is available is pretty cheap through them.

.co.uk are a lot cheaper than .com - a few £ a year.

you can use them as a cloak for a freespace website (i.e. they forward things to your cheapo webspace or free email address) or else they can host the whole lot - site and emails for about £50 a year. I've had no problems and have a number of .co.uks that I use as cloaking addresses to forward to my hosted account.

html pages you CAN create in word these days, and you can upload/take off using network connections and drag and drop on XP. I still use a secondhand £2 CD copy of MS Frontpage for my website!

Default http://www.123-reg.co.uk/

Hi Black Olive

I have used www.123-reg.co.uk for my property website. Pretty cheap to purchase the domain (www.stevenstonindustrial.co.uk) and then they offer an "Instant Site" package.

You pick a blank template that fits your needs and just type in the pages as you want.

It is extremely basic and you will struggle to be found by a search engine (like Google), however it all depends on what you need it for.

Have a look as their front page has a domain checker so you can see if what you want is available.

It is about as easy as it gets, but very unsophisticated.

AS a fellow technophobe I have used 123 -reg in the past but found www.1and1.co.uk far superior in what they offer and what you can do. There's also MrSite - just pick up the package in PC World or similar for about £40 but it's pretty basic and unprofessional looking.

(Hey, look at this - Tourerfogey giving advice on the PC Forum - who'd have thought LOL)

I have a number of domains with www.domainmonster.com, they seem to be the cheapest that I have found in the UK, also offer full DNS control which many don't. They also have a site builder if you just want a basic site.
