Default Insurance - a different question

Hi Guys

We use my Dad's old Rover 45 over the Winter months (therefore preserving my ZT from the bad weather)
I had to renew insurance last month on the 45, and had to use my NCD to make it affordable. So when I take out insurance on my ZT in Spring, I will have no NCD to use.

Do other people have a similar problem, and how do you make things affordable?

Thanks

Andrew

Uninsure the 45 and transfer the n c d back to the ZT, or have the 45 as a second car on the policy.

You cant use your no claims on 2 vehicles but you should be able to transfer it from one to the other.

When I bought a Jag initial quotes were too expensive, so I moved my no claims from the 75 to the Jag to make it more affordable, and although that left me with no no claims on my 75 the extra I had to pay on the 75 wasn't much and still made the transfer worthwhile

I too took a similar decision back in the autumn and purchased a 2007 Diahatsu Sirion as a winter car / run around vehicle.

My current insurer did not offer a multicar policy based on only one driver so I was forced to take out a new policy with no NCD. Your problem will be that Rovers are seen as high risk vehicles therefore the insurance group and premium will be high.

Had this recently when we wanted to insure the micra and Saga did'nt want to let us use the ZR's 20 years so it was %^&%$ expensive.

My view is a policy & risk is with a person not a Car ? you only have only backside .

in Our case I got so cross about it I wrote a snotty emai to saga's CEO, and surprisingly got a reply , saying if we insure at the current rate this year we can use the BIG NCB on boths cars next year.

I even managed to haggle over 100 off the original silly quote..

We will see if they stay with their promise next year.. they had better !!

If you can, try a multicar policy someone like diamond multi car is good from my findings. You could also ask if it's possible to mirror the NCB from the policy with the NCB attached. Or at the very least, accept a proof of no claims and they then maybe able to apply their own discount as the underwriter sees fit. You may also get a new member discount too. Diamond is part of the admiral group. I've always found them to be the cheapest for our situation anyways.

I just take it on the chin that unless I have a multi car policy I will have to have one car insured that may have no no claims.
I have one car insured multi car with the wife's car and one on its own as the multi car policy wont insure the other due to the remap and % bhp increase.

As you have an MG ZT you may find that you can get classic cover on it. I know some companies are now not offering it but about a year ago I was looking to insure a 75. I tried the company who insure my Dolomite and they and others said they will not cover a 75 until it is 20 years old but an MG they will even though it is basically the same car.

Has something to do with MG being considered a brand more likely to be owned by an enthusiast and looked after rather than a Rover being an old banger and used until its ready for scrap.

Ask the insurer to mirror your NCB across from one policy to the other-most will if you ask nicely.

Also shop around and do it annually.

When I got my ZT last year I initially got a quote from RAC, as that's who I insured the Mundaneo with. They wanted a grand! Went with Admiral for around £250 with the NCD staying on the Mundaneo.
I've now gone multi-car with Admiral to cover the ZT, Mundaneo and my daughter's Mini - all for considerably less than the stack RAC were wanting for just the ZT.
