Scraping noise
Hi,
Scraping noise is the best I can describe it coming from the rear of car. Not happening when applying foot brake. But tried applying hand brake very lightly and noise went away and then returned a few minutes later. I am assuming somethings up with the handbrake shoes but can I drive on this for a few days as need car for work and not able to get someone to look at it yet. Thanks |

Most likely the pin has pulled through the back plate , quite common

It's a pin that goes through from the rear of the back plate , and through the shoe , holding it in place.
The hole in the back plates rusts and the pin pulls through the hole , then it's not holding the shoe in place , hence the scrapping noise. Use the search bar , lots of threads on this and how to fix using a different pin if the plates not to rusty. I used a thin bolt, washer and nut on mine about 3 years ago and still working fine. Stan

The hole in the backplate elongates with rust ,so the pin doesn’t grip the handbrake shoes. A remedy is to use a thin nut and bolt with a lock nut and washer fitted with the bolt head on the inside. You will need long nose pliers on one side to hold the nut in place as the trailing arm is in the way,so it’s difficult to see where the hole on the backplate is. Use the same method with the spring and obviously don’t nip the nut too tight to stop the shoe from moving.
Or you could buy a new backplate but then you have the hassle of stripping everything down and rebuilding.

It's sometimes just rust and dust in the handbrake brake drum but you need the drum off to clean it anyway. Clean, replace and adjust the shoes again.
