Modern tyres work well but just don't last that long. But 5 years is a bit stiff!

I wonder if "modern" tyres have a harder life than those of old, after all even moderate driving,ie speeds.acceleration, cornering have increased by virtue of improved suspension, softer compounds, plus bad roads etc. For those of us old enough and able to remember and I for one do you had to be a bit slower on corners etc or you did end in the ditch! A heavy car like the 75/ZT and about 20/30000miles/3years is about the reasonable figure. Chris.S.

Then I've been lucky as I started to once again to use Avon's in 2001. Not had that sort of deteriation in the many, many sets I've had. As a previous poster has mentioned, compounds change all the time and adherence to regulations have to be made.
it could be any make having this sort of issue if made in the EU Kev |

I have avons on mine all round. The rears look like that, and they are only about 3 years old.
The mot guy mentioned I should keep an eye on the rear tyres, didn't understand what he meant until I had a good look.

Thanks all, I have purchased a new set of Michelin Crossclimate +, all season, Dot 2121, new EU label with 3pms symbol. Took them for a testdrive, very good. Very quiet tires, very comfortable, hardly noticing any roadsounds. 195 65 R 15, 95V, XL. The XL (extra load, reinforced) I chose because we pull a caravan and the tire should last longer. Paid 440 euro for the four of them.

Just got back from a 1100 mile drive with the new tires (holiday with caravan) on the Moonstone, very very satisfied with them. Although expensive I will order them for the White Gold 75 too! But, with a rim-protector in them this time cause they will go on the serpents. Very comfortable and quiet drive with those tires!
