Default engine oil change on dash

When you turn the ignition key, computer shows some numbers, like "24525 oil change".
So as i understand it shows how much left till next engine oil change. If so, how does it knows that? And if i change the oil myself, will it start over itself? Or i need some special gadget to fix that?

And some standart question - is there a special 10W40 needed for this car or any would do?

P.s. One more silly question - how do you activate cruise control?

It's programmed with the number of miles which MG Rover considers can be covered between oil changes. It also measures how far you've driven, compares the two and displays the difference.

You need a resetting tool which can be bought on e-bay. Search the forum for information.

So long as it meets or exceeds spec. ACEA A2 it will be fine. It can be mineral, semi sythetic or fully synthetic; it's up to you.

Press the button behind the gear lever labelled with a motorway symbol, then at your desired speed press 'set' on the steering wheel.

Service interval is 15000 and counts down to zero, so if you quote correctly and figure displayed is 24525 make sure it doesn't have a minus sign in front!
Chips

Or if last serviced twice without a reset, displayed numbers will be wrong as in your case.

Yeah i havent seen many that are reset properly, most have a minus in from of them. Mine did, but was fully serviced.

To be honest i dont take much notice of the service indicator. I reset it in May 11 and it still says 8000 miles to go! Im not leaving my oil change for 3 years.. Change annually, every 15K or when it tells you, whichever is sooner.

If you do less that 15,000 mpa, you should service annually and ignore the reminder screen. If you do more than 15,000 mpa you should follow the screen. It takes account of the stresses placed on the engine. Lots of cold starts and short journeys will tick off the 'miles' faster than it would from mainly motorway driving. That way the servicing meets the demand.
