Unless I'm missing something, all this talk of practicality v off road fun is academic, isn't it? OP is not going to be driving anything on the road for at least 2 more years.
If you want an off road fun car, go for something that has been built specifically for mud plugging. There are always loads of part built or 'nearly finished' projects on eBay.

I had a standard Land Rover Discovery 300tdi for 9yrs, very very capable offroader, and good on the road, had to get rid of it as couldn't afford, at the time to get some work done on it, rust, which unfortunately can be an issue if not treated/sorted in a timely manner.

Depending how extreme offroading you want to go, will depend what you go for.

Plenty of Land Rover websites, as well as others, to look at and to ask other owners before commiting.

Totally agree had one for 8 years, imported her with 16000km on clock had nearly 300000km when she was w/o. Overlanded around Europe, rescued buses ambulances and even a gritter in heavy snow. Apart from replacing the head at 140000 km’s she sailed through every mot. Used to out perform Land Rovers off road. Only down side was the articulation of the suspension, but you just needed to make allowances..

Would have another tomorrow..
on the downside mpg is pants.
25-26mpg at a steady 50 in the summer, 18-22 mpg round the doors.
Mine had a factory fitted 120litre long range tank cost a fortune to fill up lol.

Similar to mine. Bought it with 22000 kilometres, put an mph speedo in, and it had 320k miles on when it expired. Didn't know there was a long range tank available.
Again, if I could find another as mine was when I bought it....

Thomas have you ever thought of grass track racing? Buy. Cheap small car eg Micra, get roll cage fitted ,remove interior, lights windows amd you have relatively cheap form of motorsport. You dont need tp be 17 to compete.

They were all different, mine came from Osaka and was owned by a manager at Mitsubishi, he left his work pass in the glove box along with some medical docs.

The long range tank was an option, and fitted to Dakar support vehicles. I had heated velour seats, height adjustable suspension and diff lock. Still got the Japanese radio and CD player somewhere.
