Question Auto box slow selection in D

The Jatco box on my diesel tourer seems a bit slow to select D when waiting at traffic lights which means occasionally I hit the throttle too soon followed by a big clonk from the box which is not recommended. I've had a few autos and my box is slow in comparison.

Its just had new 402 ATF but still does it. The oil level has been carefully measured - Exactly 4 litres taken out, 4 litres put back in.

Any solutions or is the box just slow to engage? I now leave it in D with my foot on the pedal unless its a long wait but this can only blind the car behind with the brake lights - all too common nowadays.

Have the same thing on my 75 cdt saloon, but not all the time it appears to do it when the box has not reached running temp.
I tend now not to knock it out of D when stationary through fear that one day that clonk will turn into something much worse.

I was told that moving the selector in and out of D habitually can cause damage to the solenoids. Use the h/brake at lights now.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. Would be okay after it warmed up and I did a restart. Turned out to be two solenoids had gone (there nine in these boxes). Needs an Auto specialist who can do a diagnostics test, usually costs about £30.

Cost me £250 to get the two solenoids replaced. I would strongly recommend that you get a fluid change at the same time unless it has been done recently.

Good point about not putting it into N . Much cheaper to replace burnt out stop lamps than solenoids. I know you can leave it in D with the brakes on for quite a while but how long? I think the issue is overheating the fluid?

I also leave her in D unless i know i'm going to be stuck for ages. She also goes thud if I go from N to D too quickly.

I always leave a slight pause or I find the same thing if you put it in D and hit the gas hard straight away it thumps into gear.
But... I also found this on my dads Lexus and on a Mercedes courtesy car I had which where both about a year old. The Merc was actually quite bad between R and D it took ages to engage!

Out of interest do you have a synergy? Because I find my box isn't as smooth with it turned on

I always let the box move the car before hitting the throttle , this gives a smooth acceleration from stationary..

you need to repeat the ATF change , you have only replenished half of the fluid , you need to remove and replace again as you did the first time , in that way you have changed about 80 per cent of the fluid.

For me after driving my baby for 6 years this is the way to do it. Soon learnt after I first put her in D and hit the accelerator too soon, not a nice feeling from the box If stuck for a while its in N or P and I never leave her in D with handbrake on
