Very interesting, I just learnt a lot on this forum (again) that has been puzzling me a long time and never knew anyone to ask what I thought might be a stupid question!

Just a little anecdote to show why I hate that road.

I was travelling back from Stoke to Leicestershire one winters night many years ago, and was halfway from Stoke to Uttoxeter. It was cold, wet and generally horrible. I was due round at the in-laws for a beautiful dinner of roast rib of beef with all the trimmings, when I suddenly got a puncture. Not one, but two.

Walked miles to the nearest phone (pre mobile days) with 60p in my pocket. Rang the AA who sent out a bloke who was at the end of his shift and insisted in taking me to a garage in Cheshire. One tyre left, which they fitted, but said because it was a remould I should watch my speed.

*** that, I put my foot down and just made last orders at my local, severely disgruntled.

And yes, the road is very noisy and wears your tyres out.
