Default Cooling Fan

Hi ...I have a 2003 18T club and the cooling fan comes on when it feels like it. Sometimes it will come on first thing in the morning when the engine is cold. Also when it comes on the temperature gage drops to zero. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is?

Several systems are connected to the fan, so you might want to eliminate the effect of the Air Conditioning for example. If the A/C is in 'Auto' mode, the fan will start running even when the engine's still cold. Does the fan behave oddly when the A/C is left in 'Econ' mode? Does the fan start immediately you switch to 'Auto' mode (with the engine running)?

Does the coolant level vary? Do you have to top it up very often?

You may have to do a systematic investigation to figure it out.

The coolant level stays constant. It will do it with the heating switched off. I drive 30 miles to work each day and it dosen't do it every day but will do it most days. Sometimes if I switch the engine off for a few minutes when I restart it all works normaly.

With those symptoms probably a faulty Coolant temp sensor or loose connection thereto.

Temp Sensor feeds info to ECU to control fan and to gauge. If no signal received then fan defaults to max speed as a precaution and gauge drops to bottom.
