Default My Rover 75 CTD sometimes doesn't start

Can anyone help please? I seem to have an intermittent fault when trying to start my car. This is very random and it works fine for days and then won't start.

When the temperature guage is between normal and the blue setting it won't start. I have to wait until the guage is at blue (which can taken up to an hour) before the car will start again.

This is the first problem I've had in 207K miles so not bad going!

Anybody else had similar problems?

Welcome along....

If it will only start when cold, possible cam sensor failing.

You can try by removing it when it won't start, pop it in th efreezer, chill it, refit and see what happens.

Other possible cause, is the under bonnet fuel pump. A light tap with a hammer sometimes gets it some gets it going.

Mine had starting probs due to under bonnet pump problems. I gave it a tap with a hammer, and it buzzes back into life. I suspect I have a dodgy 'in tank' fuel pump which makes the bonnet one struggle, so I make sure the tank is NEVER less that one third full. Seems fine, or at least has been for the last 25k miles. Oh ... and ALWAYS give a nice slug of Millers for every tank refill.

"Millers" ? Is this a special additive, like the old two stroke oil, or a cleaner ?

It's an additive called Millers and can be bought from Halfrauds or similar. I believe it 'ups' the octane of the fuel slightly, but, importantly, it adds a 'slippyness' (technical term ) to the fuel which makes moving parts function more smoothly and also gives the jets a bit of a clean too. One bottle gives about 12 or 15 individual 'shots' which are added before each refuel. There will be other more knowledgeable chaps along shortly who may give a more accurate description.

Sounds like the cam sensor (use the search link for other threads) IIRC i paid around £60 for mine and a year later no more starting problems.
