Just seen it on the news. Must be chaos down there, no one killed with just a few minor injuries.

Not good at all, I have to say as an ex LGV driver assessor too many drivers overlook the height of the vehicle, and this is the consequence, so lucky nobody was killed!
That may however be the last time he gets to drive a Large goods vehicle!

By law there has to be a height card in the cab that states the height of the lorry. If carrying an object on the loading area behind the cab, that is taller than the height on the card in the cab, it is up to the driver to get an accurate height measurement .
If this driver did not, oh dear.

Don't think the load was too high as he would have hit the overhead warning barrier beforehand. The local radio says that witnesses saw the lorry driving along the hard shoulder and the plant on the trailer struck the bridge side support which is angled compared to the vertical upright on the overhead barrier

You could be right and I should not blame someone without knowing the facts. But it still should not hit the bridge even on the hard shoulder. Something was wrong somewhere, perhaps with the bridge?

Looking g at the photos it leads me to think it hat the digger on the back hit the bridge and not the support. The support is way over over past the carriageway.

Its a steep walkway and when you compare the line across the road with the gantry behind its pretty clear that the bridge was considerably lower over the hard shoulder. Especialy as it becomes thicker towards the supports and therefore reducing the clearance even further.

The bridge was also undergoing maintenance work.

Either way unbelievable that no one was killed.
