Default thats new?

while trying to alleviate boredom have been trying to clean up the grubby bits underneath the beast, and came across something not shown in the Haynes book. front offside wheel well, matchbox sized plastic sensor? with cable to underbonnet loom . attached by 2 tiny bolts with a 2 piece arm jointed in the middle. one bit attached to the matchbox tother one to lower suspension arm. seems to measure movement as suspension operates , but WHAT?
