Dunno of this helps, but it looks like TOAF has specific options to test the different fan speeds.

I know my three-speed fan is broken. Got a new set of bushes to try and fit when the weather and daylight improves!

That's interesting. I was curious about TOAF a while back when somebody mentioned it but my car, 2003 diesel, seems to have some non obd2 port so I wasn't sure what cable I'd need.

Good luck with the fix, let us know how it goes

Sounds strange, I've run Toaf on an early diesel, possibly 1999 or 2000 without a problem.

And yes, Toaf can test all speeds, used it on an owner's car yesterday and discovered his slow speed wasn't working but medium and high were.

Regards

Of all the three speed fans I have repaired in the past I thought this was almost impossible on a three speed fan.

However I actually came across it on a members car once. Only the slow speed had failed. this then gave the exact same symptoms as a two speed fan with a failed resistor.

Have to say until we stripped the fan out we were convinced it was a two speed with the resistor hidden away.

Maybe I need to take another look at the diagnostic port. I didn't get on my knees to look at it but the obd2 cable in my hand didn't feel like it wanted to go in. Then I believe I read that not all the diesels have obd2 ports. I can't remember what the alternative port is unfortunately as my memory is shocking

Thanks for replying - this is the 2nd one I've come across. Just about all 75s here were imported in the first years, so 3rd sp fans are very common, 2 sp less so, and I've never even seen a facelift car.

Tested the first one about 2 years ago, the owner wasn't that bothered, but now a few weeks ago the fan failed totally, sent him a 3 sp replacement. The owner has Toaf and neither the medium nor the high speed now worked. Seemed to fail at the same time(?).

The owner is up in far north so had to get the local garage to fit it, took them a day and a half, and has yet to receive the invoice, makes my standard 5 hrs look good, and I won't mention you & Steve

Keep well

All models/years have the same diagnostic socket under the steering wheel, but (most) diesels were not OBDii compliant until 2004. This refers to the emissions regulations and doesn't affect the design of the OBD socket. The standard VAG-COM 409.1 cable used to run the TOAF application should fit the socket. However, it's been reported that a few 'OBDii' cable connector plugs have round section pins, which are not standard and will damage the socket by splaying the pin receivers.. The OBDii socket requires the standard flat section pins.

That is the sort of cable I use. Just remember to short the two pins together (easy mod with a soldering iron). I think it is 7 and 8.
