I used to do emergency call out, called into work any time any day to exchanges I had never been to.
I had a call in error, someone for example in Southampton dialling Manchester and getting Plymouth. The cables going to these two places are no where near each other but true enough ring the Manchester number and someone in Plymouth answered. I checked everything in the exchange. my only clue, interrupted ringing tone when the number dialled. bingo,
the people that owned the Manchester number had their calls on divert and had diverted to the wrong number.
