Default Air conditioning compressor

My father’s air conditioning has stopped working on his 75 V6. Has anyone got a known good pump for sale? Would rather buy from a member than an unknown source on eBay.
Thanks!

I’ve not seen the car since it’s developed the problem, but I understand it’s been to an air conditioning firm, as it’s been losing gas, and the condenser is in good order. They say it’s the pump, which I assume is the compressor.

Hello Fraser,

It's rare for automotive air conditioning specialists to refer to the compressor as a "pump" which makes me wonder what sort of diagnosis your father has received. May I suggest that you find out the symptoms in a bit more detail?
  • Does the compressor engage when your father presses the windscreen demist button (engine running)?
  • Has an ultra-violet dye test or nitrogen pressurisation test been carried out to reach the diagnosis?
  • Was the "firm" your father used a fast-fit chain or general garage?

Thank you for the updates.

It went to a local garage which specialises in air conditioning repairs, as it was regassed and soon was no longer cold. They put the dye into it, and it was leaking out of the pump, which they showed my father. I’m over 200 miles away, so can’t check, but based on what they’ve shown my father he’s confident it’s what’s needed.

Hi Fraser,

OK. I know two companies who repair compressors but I've had rather unsatisfactory experiences with both of them. Otherwise an aftermarket unit from someone like Advanced Radiators in Tyne & Wear would be an option. Best of all would be an exchange remanufactured compressor via a motor factor local to your father and his garage should be able to sort this.

Buying a used compressor is risky since (1) you've no guarantee of its condition and (2) it's unlikely to have its ports plugged to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture and (3) you won't know the amount and condition of the oil retained in it. I wouldn't recommend this route as you could end up with more problems.

I hope this has been helpful. Best of luck with it.

Simon

To check the condenser it needs the bumper to be removed so not sure if they dust that? Often if the condenser is good then the o rings on the pipes can let the gas leak if it were me I would get a second opinion or remove bumper and check condenser and o rings for sign of the dye, my money is on the condenser or o rings
