To get the ZT back to where I want it, I simply don't have the money, and I'll be honest it depresses me a little that it's now becoming 'just a car'.
Hi Derrick.
It sounds to me you have come to the end of the road with the car so let it go, i had the same with my MGZT needed more money spending on it than i could get another one for which is what i did and have not looked back since

Between a rock and a hard place at the moment. Big cost to repair my car, but I can’t find the Passat I like, with a towbar already fitted. Fitting a towbar will be much the same as fixing my car.

I phoned 4 garages this morning to get a quote for fixing mine, so we could use it for holiday in 5 weeks and buy me some time to find a suitable replacement. 1 said no, they can’t do it, 3 said they’d check the parts cost and get back to me, still not heard back from them.

Update: still waiting for the 3 garages to bother getting back to me! I phoned a fourth this morning and they said to pop around later, which I did. They had a look and have diagnosed it to be the alternator bearings, small bits of metal were all over when you hold a torch to it. Quoted £550 for a new alternator, Aux belt, A/C belt and fitting, I could do it myself, I did about 4 years ago, but I really don't feel like rolling around under the car at the moment. So it's booked in for next Tuesday, as I can't find a replacement car with a tow bar already fitted. They actually said I was better keeping what I've got rather than getting a 2011+ Passat, but we'll see.

Hi Derrek.
I have listened to your video again tonight and i still say its the crank pulley, so hopefully the garage above have diagnosed correctly, otherwise you will be looking at another bill for a crank pulley as well as what they have said above, which in my opinion is about £200 to much.

And if you do need a pulley

For all the parts above it's only £262.59 so they must be charging you over £350 for fitting it should take no longer than 2.5 3hrs good luck

Hi Arctic, it certainly wasn't the cheapest, hourly rate is high, but out of the few garages round here I've used previously, they are about the only ones I'd go back to and are still in business. The old MGRover garage in Corby closed several years ago, as did the garage I previously used in Finedon. Plus they were the only garage who said to go in for them to look at, and actually gave me a quote for the work.

Collected it this morning, all good now, hearing it now, I think it was one of those things that had been present for a while but had gradually got worse so I didn't notice it, until it was about ready to give up. It's now noticeably smoother, sound and feel, with vibration I thought the lower engine mount had gone again.

A breakdown of the invoice:
Alternator - £135
Aux belt - £24.87 (gates)
Air con belt - £11.74
Labour (4.5hrs, which ties in with how far out the clock was when I collected it) - £292.50

All prices are plus labour. So not cheap, but had I not taken it to a garage, I would've been trying to change the crank pulley and still had the issue, plus I just couldn't face doing another big job on it right now.

On the plus side, I've been borrowing my wifes '18 plate ZS for work, and its actually quite a nice drive. I think I'll try and keep my car going a few more years, it'd be nice for it to get to 20 years old, and then have a look for a replacement, I like the look of the HS.

Just another thought, but the car never did sound quite right to me since I drove through some deep water just before Christmas, I'm now wondering if the water came up that far in the engine bay could it have damaged the alternator bearings?
