Default Diesel Fuel Pressure Regulator

Every now and again the engine coughs and splutters.
What I've been doing is disconnecting the connector from the fuel rail and spraying it with contact cleaner.
This works for week maybe then it happens again. Been doing this for a few months now.
Has any member got any idea what it could be?
If it's the regulator has anyone took it off and cleaned it?
Any help WILL be gratefully received

If doing as you say cures the problem for a while then a bad connection on the plug is though on it , check the pins on the multiplug are a good tight fit

My ZTT CDTi used to do similar and it was always the plug on the same injector making bad electrical connection that would trigger limp mode and sound like a tractor, also made it hard to start when like it. So I got a tiny flat head jewelers screwdriver and closed the tiny connectors a little in the connector block to make a better connection and scraped oxide away and all sorted for a good long time now.

I also had a completely failed fuel regulator on this car it was spewing diesel out at start but then stopped after a few seconds and the engine ran ok like that for a good while. Turned out being the large oring of the fuel regulator was completely gone inside and i mean gone it was no present when i removed the regulator off the end of the HP pump.

I sit corrected.
I have been mistaken.
It's the sensor on the fuel rail I've been talking about.
Thanks Artic for pointing it out

Hi Al.
Not so much as trying to correct you but to point out so members know what part you & we are referring too that plug and its wiring fail quite a lot on the FL1 so much so a new wiring section was introduced.

Our loom is joined in a junction box on the engine, the loom below with the plug marked out with dots.

See that big oring in Arctics second photo showing the regulator, thats what i was talking about as wasnt clear what you where referencing. Good fortune in your quest to understand and fix the problem.

Sensing is a passive activity until one engages in regulation based upon the sensed input so forming a feedback loop. A bad electrical connection will break the feedback loop. wink wink.
