Yes Tim. Please read on.

The "chip" is fitted extremely tightly and its retaining box may need to be cut carefully with a Stanley knife to extract it.

My above method minimises the risk of damaging the chip. Don't try to lever it out. You won't need glue. It will be a very tight fit in the new casing. Keep all parts level and push hard. Alternatively you can use Steve's idea.

Doh, i really should have looked a little more closely, before just sticking the internals into the new fob, lol.

You'd almost think they designed it that way for ease of replacement.

But of course it was an early millenium Rover so they didn't.

Well, the punt has paid off. Took a few weeks to arrive but got it yesterday and it turns in all 3 locks on my year 2000 Rover 75. Cost just over £7 in total and there are a number of sellers offering the same service on Aliexpress which is the selling platform I used. I would recommend that everyone at least takes a pic of the blade of the key for their car regardless of what they think of their current needs because we don't know what the future holds. A pic provides a good backup option and the peace of mind that goes with it should the worst happen and all keys are lost.

Default Rover 75, 2.5ltr, v6 petrol.

Very interesting thread.

My Rover worked fine night before. I Attempted to start the car next day, but got an 'Engine Disabled' message.

Unfortunately I got the spare key and tried that - no joy. The messages on the forums suggest this was a bad idea as the immobiliser code may have got corrupted.

I charged the battery, now no messages at all, but the engine just wont turn over. I Tried another smaller battery from a Toyota car, but still no joy.

Now I'm thinking I've screwed up the keys , What is the best way to get them replaced?

I have a couple of questions.

  1. How do I ensure it is the key thats at fault?
  2. How do I get the keys replaced without spending £400 on each?
  3. What do I need to remove from the car to key the new keys?

Any advice would be grateful.

Many Thanks

Hi Jay.
Are you just getting a clicking noise or when you turn the key its just completely dead nothing ? check the spade end on the starter motor, remove it and clean it then come back to us.

If it is the keys that have been scrambled then drop one of the traders a PM i am sure they will be able to sort you out through the post with a working key.

Hi Arctic,
Thanks for your response.
I dont hear any clicks.
The car proceeds as normal until the key is turned. Then nothing.

PS the key also does not remotely open and closed all the doors anymore. I've got to use the key.

I'd suggest you contact either BigRuss, cb750chris or Jamiewelch, they are the key gurus.

Only thing I've heard of that throws the transponder out of sync is persistently trying to start the car with a flat battery. Even if the transponder is out of sync that doesn't affect the central locking, they are totally separate things in no way linked

Hi Jay,

I'm wondering whether you have a K-bus fault. It's common to the BCU which controls the central locking and also communication with the immobiliser ECU.

I think it's very unlikely that a single second attempt to start the car with your spare key would cause corruption. It's also unthinkable that the transponder chip in both your keys should fail simultaneously. The evidence seems to point to something inside the car rather than with the keys.

I suspect from my knowledge of these cars that yours is fitted with a sunroof ? If so please feel free to PM me and we can easily sort this out

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes it does have a sunroof. Would that indicate an issue with the immobiliser itself?
Thanks
