Arrow Buying a Rover 75 Advice!

Hello, I'm looking to buy a estate car under £2K and i've come across
a Rover 75 2.0 CDT Classic SE for £1800.

Can any one give me some advice please? Are they good reliable cars? Any problems with parts? Any thing I should look for when i'm buying this car in particular? Also are the prone to cylinder head cracking?

Thanks for any advice, I don't know much () but i'm looking forward to driving a British Car!

Thanks in advance.

Hi, and to the club.

The Diesel engine fitted to the CDT is almost Bullet proof no cambelt to change as it's chain driven.

In standard form it can feel a little flat especially if the air flow sensor (MAF) is on it's way out but this is easily sorted with a mafam and replacement Pierburg maf. They are tunable with a re-map or addition of one of Ron's wonderful Synergy 2 tuning boxes or even both and although you may not want the extra power for speed it certainly makes the car a lot easier to drive and more responsive.

Parts are not a problem with 96% availability off the shelf there is also a very good supply of new and used parts from specialist suppliers, breakers and e-bay.

Are they good?

Honestly I can say that it's the best car I've had in years. In fact I like many others have two or even more or have owned a sucession of them. This in my opinion speaks for itself.

Check that everything works as it should, and that the plenum drains are clear.

Plenty to read up on on the forum, my advice is do your homework and use the search facility of the forum for information. If there is anything you want to know don't be afraid to ask.

Remember that many people only post if they've got a problem this can give a wrongful impression that these cars are unreliable. There are many more who have had no problems at all.

I totally agree with what big russ has stated, I had my rover 75 for 2 years and never had any problem what so-ever, reason i sold it was because I needed something bigger to carry all my gear hence my Jeep.

Get the right rover and you will never regret it.

A Classic is the base specification vehicle. Club is next with a Connoisseur being the top. Each range has a Special Equipment level too i.e Classic then Classic SE, Club, Club SE etc.

There's also the High Line (HL) with SatNav, a Limo variant and, of course, the V8 too.

For £1800 try to get the best spec one you can so long as it's been looked after. Rover 75 diesels are superb. Owned two and think they are the best cars I've ever owned.

The car you found. What year is it? manual or auto? Mileage? how many owners? is there service history available for you to read up on? We could perhaps give more specific info if we had more information about the proposed buy.

In general, they are a lovely car to drive.

Nodoubt about the car. I have had two in my time. Both K series though.

I would never consider the diesel myself due to the cost of many common faults with them. Clutchs's cost an arm and a leg to change, anything from £500 to £800 and they wont last forvever.

The fuel pump is a known issue to and this is not expensive just a pain.

The other thing with the diesel is without modification its a slow, slow car. The 116PS is a joke and has to be worked hard and the 131PS (I think) is a vast improvment but to be honest your budget is going to get you earlier cars which is the 116PS model I recon.

Classic SE should have air con and alloys, mind and dont be put off by it been one up from base as my first one was a Classic SE and it was near enough Connie SE spec by the time the company bought the car. The only thing it didnt have was cruise (not on the 1.8) and Xenon head lamps.

Not too many faults with the diesel.

Owned two diesels and neither of my clutches have gone.

Pump takes max of 2 hours to change at a cost of under £100 - non OEM part.

BHP can be increased significantly with a few simple modifications.

Do you like leather? Many variants have this.
