Hi..I am new to this site, UK based, and I am looking for some advise please. I love my MG and have had it 13 yrs. The mileage is only 44K and it is 18 year old this year. My query is, as the car has only 44K and it has the original cam belt. Would it be advisable to change the belt now or not? If yes, can anyone recommend a garage north west (Blackpool) who know what they are doing and give me an approximate price please?
Also, I have been asked if the engine is a KV6 which maybe has twin belts? I have looked at Reg Doc and engine number is 25K4FP59254873 which doesn't help. Can anyone throw some light on these queries for me please? Many thanks, John

Yeah, if it's 2.5 it wil be a KV6 I am no expert but would certainly make getting the belts changed a priority. MGRover advised these should be changed every 6 years.

Not sure who in your area but there are mobile mechanics who specialise in our cars

Cam belt changes, your leaning on an open door there!!
Regardless of the lowish mileage get all the belts done - very liitle extra cost in terms of labour and the belts are all pretty reasonably priced anyway - ASAP as there is a high probability the rubber has already cracked on the toothed belts allowing all sorts of nasty stuff getting to the fibre belt reinforcing; this aspect can be inspected with a little bit of tinkering but I personally wouldn't risk it any longer.
I'm pretty sure there is someone located in Southport who are highly recommended, just can't find the details, someone on here will be along soon with the answer .....

Perhaps not the nearest but doubt they'll be beaten on price. And there are three belts plus the aux.belt

I'm all up for throwing caution to the wind in life but if it were me I'd get the job done and have peace of mind. I'd rather spend a bit of money than end up with bigger problems and look back wishing I'd had the job done.

Hi John,

The answer to your question is definitely yes and the are 3 belts. In addition to changing the belts it would be a practice ( in my opinion ) to do the water pump, tensioner/pulleys and aux belts.

As for a garage who knows what they are doing I would recommend P.K. AUTOMOTIVE in Wigan ( it's near the hospital ). Paul ( the owner ) spent 23 years at the Rover main dealers in Wigan , so knows what he is doing and been on all the Rover courses. He would also do all the items I mentioned above if he were doing the job.

He used to have loan cars when I went to him as well ( had to put them on your insurance otherwise FOC ) .

His telephone number is 01942 238884. As for price ( if you decide to contact him ) , that is between you and him.

As far as I am concerned, belts will be changed at the manufacturers recommended intervals. Be it a petrol or diesel.
I inspect my cars belts weekly, they look to be in perfect condition, but they are being changed regardless.

I won't push my luck, I once had a cambelt snap on me in another marque of car, I don't want that nightmare again.

Hi John. Been reading and assimilating what is being said.
Let me give you my experience of when I believe belts should be changed.my background: anything mechanical to do with cars.
I bought my son’s Rover75 Connie SE at around 105,000 miles. I know when the three timing belts were changed because I took him to have them done around 28,000 miles in 2009, I have the receipt. They had never been changed from then. After doing a bit of fettling, as soon as it had been m.o.t’d, I took it to have the timing belts changed, slowly. I have those belts, and will keep them to show anyone who wants to see them what they look like, and their condition after 11 years and around 80,000 miles. After checking them over, I feel my son was a lucky man. Although at first glance they appear to be ok. If you then have a closer look, you can see that they are starting to be very weak if you twist them inside out. The teeth were still ok, but the actual carcass was past its best, so to say.
My advice for what it is worth, Change them now before you regret it. My son for the last4/5 years drove like a vicar. This car is an automatic. I believe if it had been a manual car, the belts would have gone a long time ago, by virtue of the different way a manual gearchange takes place. Having told you my story, it is up to you of course. You will only have yourself to blame if you risk it any longer, and in the long run it is cheaper.

As you are not too far from Julian Anderson in Colwyn Bay, I would strongly recommend his services, he Is one of the Best MG Rover Gurus there is and he specialises in 75/ZT's, he can be found at JMA cars.
