Odd intermittant short 'moan'
My otherwise'perfect' 75 diesel emits what I can only describe as a short 'moan' or 'groan' every so often - never at speed - stationary or low speed usually. Does not seem to effect any operation in the car but a bit disconcerting. Any ideas anybody please ? Automatic gear box

The air-con can do that now and then with the noise from behind the dash.--I think the forum description is ---whale whoop.---

I agree with COLVERT. Next time it happens, switch the air con off and see if the noise stops. It should stop straight away if that's the culprit.

At last, somebody else had a destroyer trying to enter harbour. My son heard this noise whilst in the car a few years back and it was just an intermittent background for a time and just stopped on it's own this year.

Often an early warning that the system is about to stop working.------

It's the pressure relief valve operating in the heater box, usually it's because your low speed fan isn't working

My whale has been whooping during the hot weather. Everything is working ok. I put it down to the hot weather. Only does it when firing up the aircon, not during its use.

Hi John,
If you're satisfied that the noise is the air conditioning (i.e. it doesn't happen in 'Econ' mode) then start by checking that your low speed fan works by performing the "demist test". If the fan doesn't work on low speed then we'll need to know whether you have a 3 speed or 2 speed (with resistor) system in order to advise on parts. If the fan does work, call out a mobile air conditioning specialist to check the condition of your condenser and your refrigerant gas charge. If all's well there, suspect a the early stages of a failing crankshaft pulley (specific to the diesel). Simon
