Rear exhaust section heat shield
Does anyone have the part number for the rear-most section of heat shield that covers the pipe up to the silencer?
Investigating a slight scraping noise from underneath earlier and it looks like mine has made a bid for freedom due to electrolytic corrosion through the fixing bolts. In the interim I may be able to make up larger washers to cover where they've pulled through but thought I'd check on Rimmers and I think it's item 6 on the heat shield page but very unhelpfully they only list what they stock, which really is no help. https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID999756 I've looked underneath and it can't fall off so will have to wait until I can get it on a set of lifts to investigate properly. My stainless "penny washers" have worked well. (wish they were still a penny!)

My friend, who works in an exhaust shop, swears by milk bottle caps. The plastic ones. Not sure if he'd do that to a customers car or not but there you go.
Also saw a video on YouTube where someone used the lid off a tin can! |

I too use SS penny washers but good tip, using HDPE might save continued electolytic corrosion between the SS and the aluminium shield |

I hope the heat shield you want is WEB 101512, if not then I've bought the wrong one. I got it from Rimmers a couple of weeks ago. I phoned and described what I thought I wanted and now I have it. I don't think it was cheap.....
Can't see it on the Website.. Pete |

When the penny washers fail the next step is a strap between the two bolts.

I was talking to the chap who runs the garage which has been working on the 75. Obviously using aluminium washers moves the corrosion to where the washer touches the bolt, so you'd probably lose the bolt head (like my gas boiler, steel bolt into an aluminium casting). He reckons a nylon washer wouldn't melt. Any other ideas?
When I ask him what the 75 will cost me he just says 'You can afford it'. I felt reassured, I've known him a while. I've just caught two bats in the house and put them out. Hope I can sleep. Pete |
