Default MG ZT.75 Xenon Lamps

Good Evening all, I hope this post finds you well.

I did write a thread in relation to the headlights on the ZT previously, however, upon fitting the new lamps to my ZT, I have encountered a slight issue with the left unit. Anyway, after fitting the xenon lamp, I realised that one of the units wasn't functioning correctly. I could hear the levelling motor from the lamp unit, though it sounded rather rough as if it was grinding it's teeth or dragging. after fitting the other lamp, which was originally the broken one funnily, that one seemed to work perfectly fine. It was to my understanding after refitting the bumper and testing the beam on a wall that I noticed the left light was lower than the right, which would make sense as it's making an unusual noise. After close inspection, I realised that the reflector was vibrating around from the engine, this is also apparent whilst driving around too. I know the easiest solution would be to replace the whole lamp, though I like to learn and fix things myself. I do have a donor lamp from the MK2 ZT which is the Halogen projection style, that shares most of the parts, I was thinking whether I could use these parts to possibly fix and repair the broken xenon one. Anyway, sorry if I bored you with this thread, but If there's anyone on here that's taken these things apart or had a similar issue that I have described, I would much appreciate to hear from you .

I have also attached some photos and videos on my issue;

A job I would like to look into, but haven't yet I'm afraid. I think Rick-Sta would probably be one of the most experienced people on this subject. Hopefully he sees this and can offer assistance.

There has been a how-to on re-fastening the motor ball joint adjuster/actuator but I'm having a problem finding it.

Is that what the issue is, I presume it is. Could that cause the motor to get stuck when it does the self test when you start it up?

The ball on the end of that arm needs to be located into the white socket to enable movement

The way it all works is very simple once you've twigged what the internal bits do. Obviously you have to separate the front lens from the lamp case to fix any issues with the beam adjustment mechanisms. There are threads/HowTos on doing that.

Basically, the reflector, which holds the bulbs/HIDs, is mounted on three pivots, two on the upper edge and one on the bottom.

All three can push/pull on the reflector, which causes the light beams to move left/right or up/down.

The stepper motor controls the bottom one, while the upper ones are adjusted manually using the blue cog wheels on the rear of the case.

The white T-shaped end of the motor arm should be engaged into the lower pivot and turned 90 degrees so it locks in place. It sounds like yours may have disengaged somehow. The motor arm moves in and out, it doesn't turn.

It's more common to find one of the upper ball pivots separated. This happens if the lamp is jolted/dropped, when they're sent in the mail. The one I bought had a socket snapped off.

Thanks for that advice, I didn't know the motor pushed outwards rather than turning. My broken lamp does move up and down, but it's only very slightly. I'm guessing one of the ball connectors has become loose as you described. I'll have to open it up and take a look, can the lenses be removed without damaging the plastic from prising it off? I've been heating the lens up with a blow dryer and using a screw driver to separate, though that's left some marks around the housing.

A hairdrier is one way, though putting the lamp inside a cardboard box and blowing hot air in is more effective. Alternatively, wait till SWMBO is out, pop lamp in the oven at Regulo 1 (120°C) for 15 minutes, use oven gloves, lots of newspaper and old clothes. Afterwards, if you find you need more stickem, you can get rolls of butyl adhesive from eBay. If you get hot butyl on your carpet you'll know where that expression about sticks like **** comes from. Good luck.

Sometimes the linear gearbox on the motor seizes so the forward/backward action doesn't work properly. If that's the problem, try a silicone spray lube on the sliding splines, etc.

EDIT: Here's a link for splitting the lamps https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=013872...28.SE5LBj3M5Nw
