Default Minor CD drive problem, any ideas?

On my new laptop (alienware m15x, windows 7 64bit), the slot loading CD/DVD drive keeps continually checking the disc that's inserted. You know the sound, it spins up for a couple of seconds and then stops.

Thing is, it's doing it every 30 seconds or so. It's a bit annoying to keep hearing the sound, but more importantly it's having an effect on battery life.

Any ideas on how to get the drive to check the disk only when it's inserted or accessed, like normal? I'm not all that familiar with windows 7/vista and can't find any related options.
