Default Crankcase Breather Hose - direction

Now this may seem a stupid question to some, so, sorry.

On my 1.8T the breather hose from the crankcase to the inlet manifold has a small valve in it. I do realize that the idea of the breather is to vent the crankcase relieving the pressure, but as there is not a valve on my 1.8 NA, is it absolutely necessary?

Investigating the possible further failure of the "head gasket" and having explained elsewhere, the crankcase cover had a build up of mayo, and I wondered, if it had been vented properly would these particles have been cycled round and burnt off?

Standard fitment on 1.8T. Must be working and correct way round. Only allows flow into the inlet manifold from the cam covers. Easy to check, blow down it .

Regards
