Wear on one side or rear tyre
My rear passenger side tyre needs replaced. Whereas the driver side is fine. Both tyres were replaced at the same time. Any idea why one is worn and the other one is OK? I don’t want to replace it for the same thing to happen again. Thanks.

You need to get the bearings and suspension bushes checked and 4 wheel alignment done . Have you bumped the wheel into a kerb or anything like that.

Also, check top arm for rusting/weakness!

Basically, the rear tracking is out of spec.

Not so fast Rav. Yes, maybe, but what CAUSED it to go out of alignment? As said, whack a curb, worn bushing(s), rusty arm bending? You need to get it up and poke around and under the rear end. Yes, I know what that sounded like .
Cheers, Glenn

I don’t recall hitting a curb but fife is currently pot hole central. I always avoid them if I can but some have just been impossible. I’ve hit a few crackers these past few weeks.
I took the car to the garage a few days go to get something checked. I did point out the rear tyre to them. They said that the rear bushes did have a bit of play in them but they didn’t think it was excessive. They said they would only check properly come MOT time in June if they would need to be replaced or not...

Anyway, seriously, your garage that you pay to do the work on your car won't check your rear bushings properly until MOT time - presumably if they are a fail or advisory. I would give my money to a different garage - one who will happily do what you ask in exchange for your money. I very much doubt your tire would wear so fast - in a few weeks - without some other noticeable symptoms like noise or wonky handling. As I suggested to another member recently, take a 2' carpenter's level and stand it vertically against the side of each rear tire and not how the two rear tires compare. Does the worn tire have more positive camber (tipped out at the top) if wearing the outside edge of the tire or more negative camber (tipped in at the top) if wearing the inside edge of the tire? If both sides are equal or not noticeably different, check the toe. Measure with a tape measure from the same tire tread form the front of one rear tire to the other (as far up the front of the tire as possible without fouling the tape on anything under the car - tape straight). Note the number and measure again at the same point on the rear of the tires and note the number. If there is a big difference in the 2 numbers that will indicate something is probably bent - toe out will wear the inside of the tire, toe in will wear the outside. These are basic and simplistic checks, but should tell you what to look at next. Cheers, Glenn

Cheers, Glen. I very rarely use garages. Thankfully, there’s only one or two places that I trust with my car that do the work for me. I will have a look at this soon.
I do have a handling issue - since I got my car back from MOt last year after getting the garage to do the rear back plates and hand break cable, I have this issues where when I go over any bump over the road, small or big, the rear passenger side feels like it twitches. If it’s wet and I go over the bump, it feels like the back end is going to kick out. So much it scares me! This is the same side as the tyre wear. Could it be linked?

Getting skippy rear on corners sounds like a shock absorber issue.
A bouncy tyre, under braking, will cause quite rapid tyre wear - and noticeable feathering to the tread blocks. |
