They can recover, but what were you doing to cause the burning clutch smell?

Do you mean the clutch peddle went to the floor and failed to come back up by itself - that would be a different problem.

The front wheels being able to drag the rear ones on grass, is not a good way to test the clutch.

Try 4th gear, driving along at 2000rpm, then dipping the clutch without closing the throttle, then re-engaging the clutch. If when released, it continues to slip, your clutch certainly needs to be replaced. If the clutch locks up instantly, it is good.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I'm up the road in Southport, and do a full clutch change including parts and labour for £349.99. That includes a Borg & Beck kit, too.
Edit: Up the road from Manchester, not Devon!

The pedal not returning up is due to lack of fluid -look up how to top it up, needs a bit of fish tank pipe and a syringe or something to act as a funnel to the pipe and some DOT4. Obviously you have lost fluid and likely via the slave leaking.

Its not straight forward towing which kills them, it the maneuvering. I avoid as much as is possible, maneuvering the van with the car - its a clutch killer. If you have a motor mover, use that and save the clutch or push it if you can.
