MOT extended for 6 months. Conditions?
Now we all know it is better to have our MOT carried out at the correct time, it would appear that there is some confusion as to the conditions
A member has been informed as thus: "The garage informed me that all those people with the 'free' extra 6 months MOT only get a further 6 months when they pass their test. Can't have garages missing out because of Coronavirus..." doesn't seem right to me Anyone in the trade confirm or deny?

If this is the case I hope the 6 monthly one is half price.

That is not what the government website says:-
"Your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT expiry date will be extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after 30 March 2020 - but you must keep your vehicle safe to drive." The safe to drive comment is no different to when you drive a car with a non extended MOT date. |

oh, I answered on another thread but I questioned this with my garage, and their interpretation was that if the MOT has been extended by 6 months then when you MOT it is then valid for 12 months from that date (and not when it was originally due) as a normal MOT would be.

If one was to miss out genuinely on obtaining a new Test Certificate, any test would then cover twelve months, regardless of the time since the last test; this situation is similar and any test would be to cover the next, i.e. following, twelve months.

I would have thought legislation would need to change if there were to be any restrictions on the validity of any pass?

Guys you are all missing the point. Until last Monday up here in darkest Scotland you could not go out to get your car a fresh mot with out breaking the lockdown. In fact even today you would be in breach. I defiantly would be in breach due to my age. Hence the need for the extension. Up hear garages are still closed except for the little one man outfits. I know England is different but only by a few weeks.

However if it is deemed acceptable to drive to a supermarket and spend an hour buying food, then there is no difference in driving to a garage and having your car MOT tested Brian |

[QUOTE=marinabrian;2818887]I'm not missing any point Alan, but if you are not venturing out of the house, then you don't need an MOT tested car.
Rarely disagree with you, Brian, but if your car is parked on the road, you still need an MOT even if you are not using it, just like RFL. |

I would be happy to challenge that one in Court. If the vehicle is taxed and insured and fails the MOT, you are not warned not to park on the road, but not to use it.
Sensibly and logically, not everybody has the opportunity to park their vehicle off-road and therefore the only Construction and Use enforcement possible is if the vehicle is in a dangerous condition. Ironically, though the enforcement is never challenged, a motor vehicle is not a motor vehicle if it cannot be driven, i.e. battery disconnected renders it unusable. |
