Default Click-click non starter

I have a 75 diesel and I keep getting the "click-click" non starter. It does it intermittently, aha a dead battery? NO!

If I connect a jumper pack for less than 5 seconds, disconnect the jumper pack and then crank the motor, it fires straight up. It's like there is a bug in the software (you haven't started me for a week so I'll inconvenience you)

Most perplexing, my brothers 75 diesel does exactly the same thing, it's like the control units BELIEVE the battery is dead, but definately ISN'T.

Clean all the contacts to the starter (wire brush style) including the small lead (which can corrode). Take care as they can short to earth via a large wire brush. Best to disconnect battery and clean those connections also whilst they are off (radio code may be needed).

make sure all the battery leads are nice and secure or it looks like the solenoid could be on its way out or the starter its self . if u can remove the starter and give it a good clean rgds mark

Might be worth investing in a solenoid rebuild kit. It's cheap and easy to do and we'll worth it if your having stater issues.

Yes. Typically sounds like the old solenoid contacts have become very pitted. New contacts can be bought and are relatively easy to fit, once you get the starter off. I believe they can be changed without taking the starter off. Have a look in the search .

Hi Andrew.
David is most likely right the contacts and plunger need changing, not an hard job, medium job to do for the DIY mechanic cost is not bad either £12 there about, link below

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-ZT-2-0...1/251755645921

How to do the job you can not change them while the starter is on the car so the starter as to be removed overall about 45 minutes

PS remember
This is Russ post on the subject of not trying to start the car once you are getting the clicking sound & it is caused by a failing or failed battery
