[QUOTE=FLYING BANANA;2994984]……………………….. first Power Cut since living here in Cornwall. No heating on gave the game away. I phoned the National Grid on 105 and they politely told me that the power would be restored by 09.30. It was on at 05.15 as I got out of bed to go for a wee.
Anyway it came back on at 08.00. National Grid phoned to to tell me that it was now all sorted. Hi Bob This link may be helpful for you (and others) contact your water supplier as well because all the utilities offer help to us older and not so well folk. If we get a power cut we get a text message explaining the situation and offering additional help if we need it, likewise if water supply is off for any length of time the water company will bring you bottled water. Keep well mate I'm off for a ECG later.. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information...vices-register

Roof repairs will start on Monday 5th September. Over the moon with the estimate, cheaper than I expected.
The carpenter has been and looked at the jobs. Got an estimate off of him, just waiting on a date for him to start. Phoned the NHS Loan Supply Unit for them to collect the crutches, zimmer frame and the AirBoot. They will phone prior to collection but not for 3 weeks. Managed to cut the grass out front today. Put weedkiller down in the parking bays. Pretty good going for me today as I managed just over 2 hours on my feet before ankle started to ache. Hoping to power wash the parking bays at some point this week. The young lad who lives next door to me, Fletcher, is a keen moto cross competitor but crashed out on Saturday. Ended up in A&E at Derriford hospital. As he is a minor then he would be treated quickly. Along with his mum they only had to wait 5 hours to be seen. Broken collar bone. So that’s him out of action for awhile although he is back at school. That’s it for now. Catch up soon.

Getting back into the swing of things. Quite amazed of what I have achieved today. Ok so the ankle did ache but at least it didn’t become swollen.
Started off taking the garden rubbish to the tip in BBB. Once gone then home via the garden centre. Bought 3 bags, they were blooming heavy, of farmyard manure plus a few other bits. Then home to unload. First job was to have a go at unblocking the drain in our parking spot. It was jammed with soil, and roots. Dug out what I could, three quarters full of a buckets worth. Next job was to sweep clean the parking area. Then using the weedkiller spray again around the parking area’s. Managed to get Kelsey’s bay done as well. Moved on to tipping out the farmyard manure onto the front garden. Dug it in and then raked it. Put everything away. Coffee time. Moved BBB down to the side gate and she got cleaned inside and out. In between I took in parcels for my neighbours. Once the car was clean and put back into a space I was able to rest. The ankle was aching but no swelling. That’s the longest time I have spent standing up since last December. The painting on the house has been put back till after the roofers have finished. Ok with me. But the garden work will continue. Might do away with my lawn at the back. A trip to London is on the cards. More about that later.

For your update, so wish we still had the invaluable Thanks button, perhaps as moderator you could see if a way to get it back?
Cheers and best wishes.

Unfortunately it’s not my department for reinstalling the Thanks button. I believe it’s something to do with the new system that we use. Either Pete, Paul or Christopher know about the full facts.

The list goes on. Now in need of replacing the decking in the back garden. But my neighbour Gerry is going to replace it for me. It has started to break up in few places. The former house owner installed it but he seems to have used quite a lot of odd pieces and they are the bits that are crumbling. Luckily they are around the edges. And on the approach to the garage access door. But I rarely enter the garage through that door as that too is falling apart.
Got a new door along with frame coming on the 27th of this month. Also the new boiler is going to get boxed in. Just the top to hide the ventilator and at the bottom to hide all the pipes. My mobile has been playing up so I bit the bullet and took the wee car into Plymouth, this is the first time I have taken a car into town. I would normally get the bus but they have changed the bus timetable. Anyway I found a car park by the coach station, which I didn’t know there was one. Naturally enough I had parked at the wrong end of town. The phone shop is just outside Drake Circus and I was parked near the market hall. Never mind it’s a nice walk in the sunshine. Reached the store, EE has now linked up with BT, and in I went. A very nice young lady had a look at my phone and found the problem straight away. She took the phone into the office. 10 minute later she was back with the phone operating as it should. As I have a BT landline and broadband, she suggested that I switched to the EE system. It appears that this is going to happen anyway with EE taking over the BT broadband system. £30 cheaper as well after I asked if I could lose the landline, I rarely use it. No one ever phones me on it except for the scam calls, which I block on a regular basis. And then she explained that my contract on my mobile had run out. There was two options. Either new phone and thus a new contract or keep the phone and just rent the SIM card. I still keep the same data. I opted to keep the phone, I’m used to it. So my mobile bill went from £35 a month down to £13 a month. Well happy with paying less. I know I can get it cheaper but I have been with them all my mobile life, never had any issues with them until the problem I did have. Back in 2017 I got a new mobile with them, and I was given a free Mini iPad. But over the years I have used it less and less. And of course it wasn’t really “free”, I had to pay a reduced rental on it as it was also a phone. I never used it as a phone. Used the maps on it a lot. So more money saved as I cancelled that contract as well. All in all the day was getting better. I thanked the young lady for being very helpful and that she hadn’t tried to make me take out a new contract. I said I might get a new phone next year. I left the shop and headed back to the car, and found a quicker route as well. Found the wee car sitting in the sun. I’m not a great lover of air conditioning as I find it drys my eyes and occasionally my lips. But I thought I would give it a try. Thought I might have got frostbite on the way home. It was so blooming cold. That got turned off as I approached the Tamar bridge. Up through the Street, I don’t normally go this way but they have road works near the junction with Salt Mill and it’s a pain waiting there. I could stay on the A38 and through the Saltash tunnel and up to the Carkeel roundabout but that can be pain sometimes with traffic lining up to get into, and out of MacDonalds. Soon parked up.

Although now completely mobile my use remains as it was when I had both a landline and a mobile service. As such my main use of the mobile service is for internet access via a laptop and I don't use the phone for anything other than the rare call and its camera for the equally rare pic. Re your own internet access, presumably at times you use your mobile phone but what about access via a laptop or desktop if you have one? Do you use tethering? There is an alternative to tethering which I find better to use, I use the same sim card for both calls and internet and just swap the sim around as needed. That won't suit everyone and it would be nice if 2 sims could be given to use on the same account but I'm not aware of any mobile/isp company that does that. For those who can't get by with 1 sim in this situation then buying 2 sims on separate contracts might still be cheaper than a landline option. |
