The plugs were renewed when i bought the car Chris,i'm tempted to put a flush through just this once so i know i'm starting afresh, and then follow it with more regular oil changes. The car has had one previous owner and has averaged 11k per year up untill when i bought it in Sept 2009.As mentioned i do know it had a HG during those first 4 years but whether that caused any contamination, i'm not sure.Annoyingly the previous owners garage didn't fit the MLS but i'm pleased to say it now has one in place + all the kit,new belt and water pump

Yeah the diesel oil option is the best. Many oils are dual use anyway these days. Extra cleaning additives are unlikely to harm a petrol, so they just make one type of oil.

With ref to using diesel oil in a petrol engine as a lubricant I think that's madness! It will certainly clean it, but as the lubrication is pretty poor and 10 times worse when heated it would allow a huge amount of wear to take place very quickly, yikes...

I use oil type additives in my diesel fuel to help lubricate the pump and injectors due simply to the fact diesel oil doesn't lubricate them well enough..

As for modern synthetic oils, i changed over to the fully synth low ash type when I got the 75, and touch wood, the engine sounds and runs about as good as any I have ever heard or driven.. But.. It is very expensive innit!!! still, on the bright side i have extended the distance between changes to help compensate for that..

Flush engines? nah. Not nowadays ..

Ahh, fank gawd for that! lol.. Diesel engine oil is generally slightly better quality in as much as it contains solvents for keeping the gunge in limbo so the filters can pick it up. It's good stuff..

For those who haven't noticed, the oil in a petrol engine can stay clean for weeks, but half a mile down the road after an oil change most diesel oils are black again..

I only noticed because I always check the oil level when I get home after an oil change just in case they made a mistake.

Yeah i had a change in mid may, its now jet black again. The oil in my last car.. a 214si, which wasnt changed in 3 years (because it was a temporary car i only used while i did up my 420 turbo) stayed clean for pretty much the whole 3 years!

If as suggested i run my car for 1000 miles using diesel oil as a flushing agent , will it be noticeably slower for this period James ?

Is this down to the cleaning agents in diesel oil?

Its basically because diesels mess up the oil quickly, the oil has more detergent to hold the blow by in suspension. If you put that oil in a petrol it will simply clean up the deposits already there. Just use the same grade of oil as you would normally and definitely change the filter along with the oil!
