Default Ramps or axle stands?

Hi all- What are peoples views safety wise when working under the car- are axle stands or ramps the best? I'm thinking if its on stands and your giving something thats tight some welly there is a slight chance of knocking it off the stands. Then ramps- these are pretty secure(if wheels chocked etc) but the white knuckle ride trying to get on the ramps without going over the edge is something I dont enjoy. My latest thoughts are building my own wooden ramps with 10" x 2" joists (google wooden car ramps and see the Mustang ramps)as its easy on and they are probably stronger than some 20 year old rusty metal ramps. What are your preferences folks?
