Default Petrol fuel filter - urgent question?

I have been struggling for a few months with poor starting, particularly when hot on my 2.5KV6. More on that later.
Today I took a look at the filter in the fuel tank. Definitely a WGS100072, to which I fitted the clip at the start of the year, though it wasn't loose.
I've unscrewed the filter, and found inside there is no cartridge. Is this correct? Speed reading through various threads, and searching spares suppliers says that there should be, if I have it right. I found a small o-ring on the sigot, and a large one round the opening.
I shall have to put it back together as-is for now, woulld like clarification of a cartridge so that I can fit it later if necessary.

Hi Stewart,

Are you saying that you have a filter canister without any filtration material inside ....

Being the owner of a car with the early non self-loosening fuel filter I'm not qualified to give you a definitive answer but basic principles tell me that for your filter to do its job it should have some kind of recognisable filtration material inside it.
