Default Exhaust gasket

ZT 1.8 Turbo petrol.

I'm just putting my engine back together after replacing the head gasket.

It's probably a daft question but I've come to a bit of stop.
Does anyone know which way round the exhaust manifold gasket goes on?
I didn't notice when I took the old one off and now I come to fit the new one it's thrown me.
The gasket has two different materials, smooth and black one side and a patterned aluminium material on the other.
I'm assuming that it does matter but I can't find out why.
I would really appreciate it if you guys did.
Many thanks in advance.
Corneliusfield.

I always place them silver side to exhaust side, not sure if that is how it is supposed to go but the manifold would get hotter than the head as it is not cooled.
Hope that helps
