Question for the Engineers
My god Zeus!!
I am looking at one sitting in the tray at the back of my desk as I type this. Not sure but I think I got it a college, along with my slide rule and a set of log tables!!!!!!!! What a magic book it was (is). These posts made my day!! |

In something like 40 years of engineering I've always used a 5mm as a tapping size for a M6 thread. Taps, as you may know come as a set of 3, taper, second and plug. The important thing here is always use tapping paste (or cutting paste) Most of the time I used a second tap to start with and a plug obviously in a blind hole. Even oil is better than nothing if tapping paste isn't available.

WOW. This thread is a blast from the past. Takes me back to 1955/1960 during my five year apprenticeship as a tool-maker.
The factory has long gone and as I was, I guess, the youngest in the tool-room all the toolmakers and machinist have gone too. I still have all the taps and dies though. Even my micrometre---. |

My preferred cutting oil is Rocol RTD.
Anyway I've attached a PDF for Ian which he can print off and laminate for the future....perhaps tape it to the headstock of your lathe I quite like Presto Counsellor, more for you to read Brian |

19/64 = 0.2968 19 divided by 64 = 0.2968 top number divided by the bottom number converts fraction to decimal. I'm in a better place this evening to where I was this morning. macafee2 |

Well I've been doing it for years and it works or me. It is a little tighter than ideal, but a very easy calculation. Honestly can't remember where I picked it up from - probably at engineering college, but that was 45 years ago. |
