Exclamation EP Fault - ECU Failure?

For reference, the car is a 2004 2.0 diesel automatic

So yesterday the car wouldn't start - no warning lights, but 'EP' on the gear selector bit. book says 'emergency programme' due to a gearbox fault - though this seems to be working perfectly?

Had the RAC out - seemed to know rovers fairly well, checked all fuses, fuel pump, gearbox, ECU, all sorts... unfortunately he could not get his fault reader to talk to the ecu. His verdict was although he could see no damage to the ecu, it must be this because when you put the ignition on, a lot of the lights do not come on (glow plugs, etc.)

really not sure what to do next! Thinking send the ECU off (anyone on here that does them??) but not sure if there is something I am missing...

Cheers, Mike.
