I'm at the putting together stage. I can't for the life of me get the gearbox to fit. It's lined up, I'm using a good transmission jack, I've put in two long bolts to aid alignment but it just won't slot back in.

I used my borescope to check nothing is out of place inside and the slave is lined up, the bearing cup sitting perfectly on the clutch fingers, and I've even used a drive shaft with the 'box in gear to try and help align the 'box shaft splines in case they're not matching the friction plate.

I just can't get the dang thing to slot into place. I've been at it all day and no further forward. Surely is should just 'clunk' into place - I've never had to force-tighten a 'box on and don't want to start now!

Any advice welcome at this stage 'cos I'm at the end of my tether (again).

Most likely stuck on the splines. Move it about and turn either the engine or the box while pushing and wriggling.

It will come right, unless the clutch plate has a problem with spline size or alignment.

You did fit the clutch plate first to see if it is the right one for the gearbox shaft?

The two long bolts you've fitted to aid alignment may be hindering you in getting the box back as they will not let you rock the box around much, some Renaults have the long studs fitted as standard and its not unusual to take them out to get the box back in then refit them afterwards

I've called in The Heavies - a 3-ton lifting crane.

I figured that it would be better dangling than supported by a tranny jack, what with the rocking and jostling etc.

Clutch plate splines up with gearbox shaft, for those that asked.

Jumpin' Jehovah!!! It's in!!!! The gearbox is IN!!

After a bit of dangling and a few turns of the crank via the pulley wheel, it eventually lined up and went in with satisfyingly-light 'clonk'. Bolts went in by finger, which is good 'cos it tells me that it's all aligned properly and then I nipped them up with the socket. A quick check with my borescope inside and all is well.

Right now, I'm skulling an ice-cold Stella, straight from the bottle. It tastes very good indeed.

Get one of these - it's made my life in general much easier.

http://www.bodyshop-tools-supplies.c...FQsEwwodtLkAEw. It's a lot less on eBay. I paid £70 for mine, brand new.

Don't get euphoric now, these thing happen thousands of times each day.

Just don't mistake the brake fluid for the Stella!

I think your gearbox jack was maybe pointing the box at a slightly wrong angle.

Thanks everyone. It's been...emotional.

Right now I'm so choked with hayfever I couldn't tell the difference between brake fluid and Stella.

DMGRS - Dude, you're message box is full!!

Congratulations, if you ever fancy a holiday in Northampton, you can come and do the clutch on mine even if it doesn't need it! (the current one has been in a year and half so far: so bound to fail again soon.)

Yes, you should use an anti-cease compound - like beer or tea - you need to get the job finished!!
