Default Cdti Thermostat

Morning, i now have the money to spend on my car, i want to fix my Thermostat as it never gets over the quarter mark,

What needs to be done to change this so i know what to ask for when i go to the garage?

Will the car need new coolant?

Default Thermostat

Let's know if that works Alex. I've got an idea it might be an unreliable sender or gauge.

Thats the thing i dont want to take the risk of it now working,

See how much they are going to charge,
Does the thermostat send the engine temp to the gauge?

How does the system work?

The thermostat is a valve. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature the valve opens and lets the coolant flow around the radiator. At a guess it also sends the temperature signal to the IPK via the ECU but I'm not totally up on the technical aspects of this. Thought I'd chip in though seeing as you hadn't yet had an answer.

In the hope of trying to be helpful rather than teaching you to suck eggs I offer this help. The thermostat as already mentioned is a valve that is capable of opening and closing to regulate/maintain the engine temperature.
The temperature is measured by a temperature sender which may or may not be part of the thermostat housing.
My suggestion if you want to save time/money is to have a think/look for yourself at the symptoms.
Let's assume that since you have owned the car the gauge used to reach halfway?
Has any work been carried out that ties in within this change?
Can you get hot air from the heater or has this performance declined too?
What you need to establish first basically is whether the car is running cold or the instrument cluster displaying cold.
Have a think about these things first and reply if you like.
I will then offer you some more advice, I apologise for any vagueness but I have only owned my CDTI for less than a week but I certainly know how a car works and willing to help.

That must be the longest time ever for any thermostat replacement!

Take a look where it is and the amount of pipework that needs to be removed. I have one in next week and I hope Pete is looking forward to it as I am not.I will find a K16 head to do instead
