It certainly looks striking. After much thought and examination of my motives, and even allowing for the fact that I have 25% Welsh heritage, there might be a halfway good reason against it!

The dragon over-covers all other national representations on the flag which is possibly against the heraldic rules. If I were related to, or even a son of, Owen Glendower I might be in favour!

  • Russia: top down; White, blue, red horizontal stripes - I think you'd soon notice if the red was at the top.
  • Germany: top down: Black, Red, Yellow horizontal stripes - again I think you'd soon notice is the yellow was at the top
  • Belgium : from the flagpole - Black, Yellow, Red Vertical stripes. Somewhat difficult to confuse with the German horizontal striped flag with the colours in a different sequence. But you can confuse them and then say the Union Jack is easy????????
  • Poland: top down; White, Red horizontal stripes - I think you'd soon notice if the red was at the top.
You'll have to try a little harder to find something as dumbfounding as the Union Jack - And yes most representations of flags (at least in the western world) are shown with the Flagpole on the left ..... Except there are exceptions - The Stars and stripes patch on an American serviceman uniform when worn on the right shoulder for one has the canton (blue field with stars) on the right side of the flag: this is how the flag would fly from a pole in the soldiers hands as he charges forward...

What's dumbfounding about the Union Flag?

It's a model of unity and common purpose of three nations with equal precedence under the same laws (at least prior to devolution comparatively recently). Wales is an exception of course, because it is not a sovereign nation but rather a principality.

In common with flags from the year dot it is instantly recognisable and cannot be confused with any other. Agreed, some might wrap themselves in it for uncommon purpose, or even hide behind it occasionally, but that merely goes to it's standing around the world.

You will only notice they are wrong if you know what is right.
You know which way the flags should be but I would not have had any idea if I had not looked them up, why should the Union flag be any different?

As for confusing the German flag, they use the same colours, vertical or horizontal makes little difference to those that do not know.

It is no good saying I know which is right how come other get it wrong, they get it wrong because the design of the flag allows for the mistake to be made. I would be surprised if the Welsh flag was flown upside down because someone did not know which was the correct way up. The design does not really lend itself to that mistake

No offence meant, but maybe it’s different because it’s the flag of the home countries Union, ie home of the majority of members on here?
