Default Damned Cheek!!

When i got my car 2 weeks ago it was taxed for nearly 4 months. I bought the car from a dealer and all was well. Today i got a letter from the DVLA to say my car is not taxed and i must do it immediately or remove it from the public road. I checked if it was taxed online a few days after i took it home (bought on 7th, checked on 10th) and it was.

Turns out although i had the disc the previous owner cashed it in what must be a day or so before my registration document was processed. It seems you dont need the original disc to do it. Not happy is an understatement. Ill be firing off an angry letter to the previous owner..

That is an absolute disgrace, Was the dealer aware that this was the case?

I'm sure that is something like Fraud, or theft by conversion.....

I agree. Its fraud - misrepresentation. Contact your local trading standards people. They are almost certainly going to take it up with the dealer. Even if the dealer did not know, its still misrepresentation.

See what it says on the dealers receipt......dealers can no longer cash tax disc's so it was the previous owner, which suggests it was taken from the car before it got to the dealer...

I actually had the disc though, and it was still taxed at least a few days after i owned it. The dealer is annoyed as well since it was sold with tax. I didnt know the DVLA would issue a refund without the disc.

Clearly its not the dealers fault, but im wondering how the refund was issued, when and who to.

Copied from DVLA pages:-
Application without a tax disc
Fill in a V33 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax when the tax disc is missing’. Send the form to Refund Section, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AL.
The V33 form is only available by phoning DVLA Customer Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 or from a DVLA local office.

Hmmm I think the bloke who cashed the tax in should be prosecuted, and the rules changed so this can't happen again. ...

Anyone could be caught out by this, i was driving around for who knows how long with no tax without realising it! With plate scanners these days that's very dangerous... If i get fined i will go ape!

I will phone the DVLA tomorrow and find out what is going on.

I suspect the previous owner told DVLA it was lost (to get back at the dealer who might have given him a poor deal) who knows

As said before it won't be the dealer's doing as the trade cannot get VED refunds anymore
