As some of you will know, I was very sceptical about these cameras. After the posts of recent days regarding dash cameras, I'm thinking of getting one myself

Looks good, but do you have more than one vehicle in the household, if so maybe a dedicated 'crash' camera isn't the right option.

I'm thinking of using a GoPro Hero camera as it comes with a variety of mounts and can be used for more than just this one job, Diving, Motainbiking, Motorcycling. Most of the bike related vids on youtube have been recorded using gopros as are a lot of the skiing ones etc..

OK it doesn't give the the added data of the one you have linked to, but do you really need all the data? Most of the time the video tells the whole story..

I'm not sure about these.
Firstly, being shock-triggered they'll only record the crash once it's in progress, not the lead-up to it, which is what usually shows who is to blame.
Secondly, if the windscreen breaks they won't record anything. A dash-mounted camera would still record.

The GoPro doesn't do loop-recording so when the memory card is full it simply stops recording. They're also expensive.

These, on the other hand, are almost as good in terms of picture quality, cost a lot less and do have a loop recording function.

My bro' just bought one after I showed him the video review by Techmoan...

He got it for recording our whitewater kayaking fun but it does make for a very good dash-cam, too.

I'll be getting one when funds permit (along with the vast array of other stuff that also resides in the 'when funds permit' list).

Another option:

I can't recommend anything based on personal experience, but some people on another forum I was an active member of a few years ago used the Road Hawk system and were very happy with it.

I think you've misunderstood how it works.

GoPro is ace, plus you can always stick it on the TL when you go out to play
